Classicism developed as an art direction in the middle of the 18th century. In terms of content, the painting of this style is based on motifs from the antiquity and the Renaissance. The aim of the artists was to use a simple and harmonious forma aesthetic to create works that should reflect the beauty of nature.

Here one tried to isolate oneself from the previous flow of the rococo, which primarily focused on a sensuous aura. Classicism was also opposed to Romanticism, which arose at the beginning of the nineteenth century. The romantics rejected the rather objective representation of classicism. Moreover, from the middle of the nineteenth century onwards, realism developed as a contrasting direction, whose painters, above all, made a detailed depiction of reality and linked this with social criticism.

One of the most important painters of classicism is the Frenchman Jacques-Louis David, who lived between 1748 and 1825. Among his most famous works is the painting "The Oath of the Horatians" from 1874. The portrait with an antique motif was commissioned by the French royal house and is now in the Parisian Louvre. Another important representative of the painting in the classicism was Jakob Philipp Hackert. The German painter lived from 1737 to 1807, creating mostly classical landscapes such as the work "Landscape with temple ruins in Sicily", which can now be admired in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.
