Art Nouveau

Around 1900 a new formal language seizes pictures, books and objects of daily use alike; strands of hair grow out into tendrils, frames put forth buds, the surface belongs to ornament. Its names betray the centres. Jugendstil it is called after the Munich journal Jugend, founded in 1896, Art Nouveau after the Paris gallery L'Art Nouveau, which Siegfried Bing opened in 1895, and in Vienna one speaks of the Secession style.

The poster became the leading medium of this art of line, once Jules Cheret had opened up colour lithography for the street. Alphonse Mucha became famous overnight around the turn of the year 1894/95 with a theatre poster for Sarah Bernhardt, and Théophile Alexandre Steinlen gave the cabaret Chat Noir its black cat in 1896. In England Aubrey Beardsley confined the line to pure black and white. His illustrations to Oscar Wilde's Salome of 1894 made the book itself an Art Nouveau object.

Vienna gave the movement its strictest form. Gustav Klimt, founding president of the Secession in 1897, joined gold ornament and figure; his Kiss of 1908 hangs today in the Belvedere. Koloman Moser transferred the design idea to furniture, glassware and bookbindings with the Wiener Werkstätte, co-founded in 1903. That a poster, a chair and a painting can follow one and the same design was the true ambition of this short, consequential style.
