Impressionism

On 15 April 1874, in the former studio of the photographer Nadar on the Boulevard des Capucines, an exhibition opened of painters no longer willing to wait for the verdict of the official Salon jury. The critic Louis Leroy mocked Claude Monet's harbour picture Impression, Sunrise and so unintentionally handed the group its name. Seven further group exhibitions followed until 1886; Camille Pissarro was the only one to take part in all eight.

The manner of painting relied on open, unblended brushstrokes, on light and weather as the real subject, and on motifs without classical dignity, on railway stations, boulevards, gardens and riverbanks. Pierre-Auguste Renoir found his subjects in convivial Paris, Gustave Caillebotte in the new street vistas of the rebuilt city; Paul Cézanne, who took part in the early exhibitions, later developed the picture's order in a direction of his own. Monet himself carried serial seeing furthest and painted the facade of Rouen Cathedral between 1892 and 1894 in more than thirty versions, each at a different hour and in different light.

After 1880 this became a European movement, and in 1886 the dealer Paul Durand-Ruel opened the American market to it with a great exhibition in New York. Max Liebermann brought the bright plein-air tone to Germany and from 1898 stood at the head of the Berlin Secession. The light of the Valencian beaches in Joaquín Sorolla and the blue hour of Danish Skagen in Peder Severin Krøyer show how far the ripples reached. What remained everywhere was the bright palette and the refusal of academic polish.
