Expressionism

The knife in the wood tolerates no half-tones. The young painters of the Brücke group, founded in Dresden in 1905, therefore made the woodcut their leading medium: hard edges, planes left standing, the resistance of the material as part of the form. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner cut the group's programme and posters in wood and carried this angular formal language into the paintings of his Dresden and Berlin years.

The new will to expression had forerunners and relations. Vincent van Gogh had demonstrated that a painting can make inner agitation directly visible; Edvard Munch supplied with his prints the Nordic counterpart to van Gogh's painting. In Munich in 1911 Wassily Kandinsky, Franz Marc and August Macke came together in the artists' group Der Blaue Reiter, which released colour from the depicted object. Paul Klee and Alexej von Jawlensky stood close to the circle.

Beyond that, individual paths remained the rule. Paula Modersohn-Becker found her way in the artists' colony of Worpswede to an austere simplicity that anticipated much. In Vienna Egon Schiele drove the line towards the nervous, and after the First World War Max Beckmann built his own pictorial world from hard contours and crowded pictorial spaces. In 1937 the National Socialists defamed this art in the Munich propaganda show Degenerate Art and confiscated thousands of works from German museums; the rank of this art in the history of modernism it has not damaged.
