Richard Wilson

    1714   -   1782

Enveloped in the mystical mists of Penegoes, Montgomeryshire, Wales, Richard Wilson's life journey began around the year 1713. A chosen master of color and moods, he passionately captured his visions on canvas. He emerged from the silence of the Welsh valleys and became a seminal figure in European landscape painting. The final chapter of his artistic odyssey took place in May 1782 at the stately home of Colomendy Hall in Loggerheads, Denbighshire, Wales. His works however, defy transience and live on in our high quality art prints. Beneath the beating heart of London, Wilson learned his craft. Initially, he dipped his brushes into the paint pot of portraiture before turning to landscape painting in 1746. He drew the likeness of the North Wales aristocracy with his brushstrokes before discovering his passion for the wild beauty of the landscape. The year 1750 marked the beginning of his Italian odyssey, which took him through the fairy-tale streets of Venice for a year and ancient Rome for six years. Through the whispering echoes of master painters such as Claude Lorrain, Gaspard Dughet and Albert Cuyp, he absorbed their inspirations and created his own distinctive landscape painting. His brushes danced across the canvas, creating a fascinating fusion of real landscapes and the idealized notions of classicism.

Upon his return to England in 1757, Wilson continued to paint, leaving a legacy that was recognized by the most prestigious association of artists of his time, the Royal Academy of Arts. As the 1770s progressed, however, his artistic passion was clouded by his deteriorating health, and demand for his work diminished. Nevertheless, he left us a legacy that is brought back to life through the elegance of our fine art prints. Wilson's signature style was distinguished by his expressiveness in depicting sky, light, and atmosphere. With his artworks, he created a magical transition between the real and the idealized. The sky, filled with fleeting plays of light and changing colors, became an integral part of his compositions. His paintings exude an amazing vibrancy, which is also expressed in our reproduced art prints.

Richard Wilson, a master of his craft, has secured a lasting place in the history of European landscape painting as an artist. His unique style, a combination of realistic depictions and idealized landscapes, has influenced and inspired generations of painters, including Joseph Mallord William Turner and John Constable. His appreciation for natural beauty and his ability to capture that beauty on canvas with an almost poetic sensibility make him a true genius of landscape painting. With our fine art prints, we bring Richard Wilson's unique artwork into your home. Whether you're a die-hard art collector or a newcomer to the world of art, Wilson's landscapes capture the beauty of nature and the human experience in extraordinary ways. Each print is reproduced with the utmost care and dedication to preserve the intensity and vitality of Wilson's original works. Celebrate the life's work of this extraordinary artist with us and be inspired by Richard Wilson's landscapes.
