Sketches

Sketches show the handwriting of the greatest artists
. All great artists have perfected their craft via sketches. Klee, Macke, Münter, Kandinsky, but also universal geniuses like Leonardo da Vinci are known for their unique sketches. What is the appeal of sketches?

Sketches are often devoted to a detail such as feet, arms, hands or legs. People and heads are depicted from different perspectives. To do this, compare Michelangelo Buonarroti's illustrations at www.meisterdrucke.com. But not only people fascinate great artists! The characteristics of animals, their movements and peculiarities are also masterfully captured on paper. A sketch is created quickly. It is always a matter of capturing the moment in which the artist has observed an animal. Edgar Degas, in "Study of Dead Fox in the Forest", perfectly captures the gravity of the lifeless animal's body on the forest floor, even if other details are missing.

Studies are often drawn on paper in monochrome with pencil or charcoal. However, you can also choose a colored subject: "Mother and Naked Child" by Mary Stevenson Cassatt focuses entirely on the intimate relationship of the two. Especially the sketch with the emphasis on how the child nestles against the mother in the chest area creates a great inwardness, also intimacy, which the viewer can not escape.
In contrast, Henri de Toulouse Lautrec's ballet sketch conveys verve, verve and movement in a magnificent way. Precisely because the artist concentrates only on the essentials, the effect is all the more immediate. This work of art proves that some sketches are also painted in oil on cardboard. However, only the main lines are executed. Whether groups of people, fight scenes, muscle lines, landscapes or city views: In the sketch, an artist shows the extent to which he has artistically penetrated a subject. This is what makes them so appealing.
