Jean-Antoine Watteau was born in Valenciennes, in the north of France. During his childhood and adolescence, the artist is described as being withdrawn, for reasons such as the father's contentiousness, violence and frequent drinking. Even at consumption, he suffered early. His artistic vocation is also clear at an early age, at the age of ten he is studying with Jacques-Albert Gérin, a valued Valenciennes painter.

In Paris, he meets Flemish artists and makes ends meet by making copies of religious paintings, including the Dutch artist Gérard Dou. Watteau gets acquainted with the decorative painter Claude Gillot , especially his work as a theater decorator awakens his enthusiasm for the theater scene, for mythology and for the sophisticated life. The collaboration was brief and Watteau switched to another decorative painter, Claude Audran III, for whom he made wall decorations. In 1709 he applied for the scholarship of the Prix de Rome, but only second. He also applies to the Paris Academy, but is only accepted years later, because his shot ("embarkation to Kythera") is so long in coming. Shortly before his death Watteau painted one of his greatest works, "The shop sign of the art dealer Edme Gersaint", today in Berlin in the castle Charlottenburg to see. The painting is meant to be an advertisement for an art shop and shows customers and sellers their daily sales activities. Watteau never had wealthy patrons throughout his life; his buyers were mostly middle-class. Even Antoine Watteau's health condition is disastrous, in London he is looking for one of the most respected doctors of the time and admirer of his work, but the situation does not get better. A few months after his return to Paris, he dies at the age of 36, presumably due to tuberculosis. On his deathbed Watteau, clasping a brush, should have painted paintings in the air.

Despite his short life he was able to exert considerable influence on the art, he is considered the inventor of the genus of the "Fete galante". It is characterized by idyllic rural scenes and theatricality, often inspired by Italian couture and ballet. Through this style, he influenced not only the painting, but also the ornamental art, as well as poetry, music and of course theater - far more than other creators of the 18th century. Even a dress form is "dedicated" to him, because this was so characteristic in his paintings, the shoulders of the dress must fall down in large folds. After his death, his influence remained, however, in England during the Regency era and later in France and Russia. In the twentieth century Watteau lived on, associations dedicated to him were created and exhibitions took place in Paris, Berlin and the USA. Since the year 2000, the Watteau Center exists in his hometown. © Meisterdrucke
