Edgar Degas was drawn into the spell of art at an early age. With talent and a great love of art he passed through his training as a painter. In descriptions, Degas is portrayed as inconspicuous and slightly morose. His eyes dark and always introverted. When Degas tried to copy Old Masters in one of the galleries of the Louvre one day, he met Manet. The painter had an open and charming character and was already an experienced artist. Degas was working on an etching and the older painter immediately saw what an unsatisfactory result the completion would lead to. Manet voiced criticism and since that day the two artists were bound by a close friendship. Degas entered the Bohemian art scene of the Impressionists.

Degas did not become a typical impressionist. He lacked temperament and freedom. The artist said about his own works: "There is no art that is less spontaneous than mine..." During his training Degas spent time with the great Ingres. He recommended that the young talent "paint lines and then paint more lines." Degas preferred working in the studio, not out in the countryside. Edgar Degas was attracted to ballet and the theater. His works show insights into the lives of dancers, which seem like snapshots. How did an artist who apparently radiates so little joy of life and enthusiasm succeed in capturing the world of rustling skirts and fast steps so skilfully? Degas made numerous sketches before each project and approached the motif through painstaking diligence. Degas is considered an artist who cultivates toil. The Frenchman's works never lose their contours, his love for drawing is clearly visible.

The charismatic Manet and the introverted Degas long cultivated a friendship that was unusual even for the art scenes in Paris. The highest proof of Degas' friendship was the creation of a double portrait of Manet and his wife. One day Degas visited his friend and noticed that the impulsive Manet had stabbed the painting with a knife. Edgar took the painting and left the house. The two never spoke another word to each other again. © Meisterdrucke
