Van Gogh's brother wrote about this work: "Even from a distance it hits the eye. The irises are a beautiful study full of air and life. And in the midst of this bluish splendor, a white lily grows upright. Pure and lonely. And yet she does not seem sad, but looks proudly on her conspecifics. The emergence of the oil painting casts a sad shadow over the Dutch artist. Shortly before his death in 1890 Vincent van Gogh had painted the lilies. He was considered a nerd, introverted human. Even his brother, who for the most part took care of his well-being, wrote: "This is a madman." In his way of speaking, there is something for which one either holds a great deal of him or does not like him. ...). "He increasingly complained of health problems. After a quarrel with fellow artist Gauguin, van Gogh cut off a large part of his left ear. But Gauguin could have been the culprit. Van Gogh then lived in a mental hospital in France. Suicide attempts followed. He himself called the picture "The lightning rod for my illness." Stopped in the painting from being maddened? The publication was provided by his brother Theo. This work and other well-known paintings by van Gogh were presented by Theo to an exhibition of the "Société des Artistes Indépendants" - an artists' association, and became world famous. © Meisterdrucke
