The Twelve Sunflowers in a Vase is one of Vincent van Gogh's most famous paintings. He made it together with a number of other sunflower paintings to enlist his painter colleagues Emile Bernard and Paul Gaugin, who were to visit him soon after the completion of the painting, for a painter's colony in Provence, which he wanted to found. In a letter to his brother Theo, Vincent van Gogh wrote: "In the hope that I will live with Gauguin in our own studio, I want to make a series of pictures for it.
