Symbolism

Symbolism is a movement in painting and sculpture that flourished at the end of the 19th century. It is temporally connected to the epoch of realism. As a distinction to this style, the focus was placed on deeper elements of life. Whereas realism tried to convey an image of life and society that was as detailed as possible, the artists of symbolism focused on motifs that were not immediately comprehensible. At the same time, however, they wanted to avoid transfiguring objects or feelings, an approach characteristic of Romanticism. Instead, Symbolism's understanding included that things in the world have an elusive core that is not visible to the naked eye.

Ancient or biblical subjects were often used as subject matter for painting. In addition, many works deal with themes such as death, dream or passion. These are subjects that are elusive and leave much room for interpretation.

Among the most important artists of Symbolism is Mikhail Alexandrovich Vrubel from Russia, who lived from 1856 to 1910. Likewise, the Swiss painter Arnold Böcklin can be counted among the most famous representatives of the art epoch. Böcklin lived from 1827 to 1901 and created one of the most important works of Symbolism with the five-part series of paintings "The Isle of the Dead".
