The barren soil is whirled up to fine dust by the stomping hooves of the noble steed. The rider's torso is bent forward; it is a scene full of dynamism and power. It is also a picture, as it is not only in America, but also in the rest of the world in mind, when the so-called Wild West is mentioned. Although it is known today that many of these seemingly typical depictions have been too romanticized, the artists of the second half of the 19th century have nevertheless shaped our very own image of the conquest of the West.

Artists like Frederic Remington. He is very well known today for his depictions of the Wild West and who knows his complete works, will find only a few other motives. Remington was an East Coast resident by birth, born and educated in New York and at Yale University in Connecticut. His first contact with the west of the country was Remington at the age of 19, when he wanted to buy a ranch in Montana. The project failed due to lack of financial resources, but the vastness of the country, which he was allowed to experience there as well as skirmishes between the natives and the US cavalry, should influence his work from then on sustainable. In fact, Remington had more direct experience of his subject with the more frequent trips than many of his fellow artists, who also painted scenes from the Wild West.

Above all, Remington's work lives from the depiction of what most of the observers do not know from their own experience. His choice of subject and his unmistakable talent for the right perspective made him, as well as the ability to vivid and at the same time artistic representation, the correspondent for influential weekly magazines. His pictures were widely distributed. Even President Theodore Roosevelt, himself a friend of the Landscapes of the West, took notice of them and noted that the cowboys and ranches, the horses and the herds of cattle in Remington's paintings come to life. At the end of his career, he devoted himself increasingly to sculpture, with similar motives were also in this art priority. In addition, Remington created a noteworthy series of paintings in which he focused on the darkness and colors of the night. © Meisterdrucke
