William Blake's works often deal with religious and mythological themes, including John Milton's "Lost Paradise" and Dante Alighieri's "Divine Comedy," which were in some ways precursors of Blake's own work. The painting illustrates in Blake's characteristic and unique style the first song of the "Divine Comedy": Dante has gone astray and faces three predators: a panther "in a colorful spotted fur state" (v.33), a lion "so grim that the air seemed to quake "(v. 48) and a she-wolf" pregnant with embers "(verse 49). The three animals are symbolic of lust, pride and greed. Dante is pushed by the animals into a valley where the ancient poet Virgil rushes to his aid.
