Rembrandt van Rijn - “The Night Watch”

Rembrandt’s “The Night Watch” is actually a group portrait. Yet it doesn’t feel like one. The guards aren’t standing neatly side by side; they seem to be in motion. One is pointing forwards, another is loading his musket; you can almost hear a drumbeat. Emerging from the dark background, the group pushes into the light, restless, silent, perhaps already on the move in the very next moment. Rembrandt does not turn this into an official commemorative portrait, but rather a scene full of tension. His light does not fall evenly over the figures, but seeks out specific areas: faces, hands, metal, the girl’s bright presence in the midst of the crowd.
The reproduction measures 70 × 58 cm and is executed on Leonardo (satin) canvas. The surface renders the dark areas, warm areas of light and subtle transitions in a balanced manner. The motif is mounted on a stretcher frame and continues in a mirrored pattern along the sides, so that the edges appear seamless.
The “Lola” frame provides a calm backdrop to the painting, allowing Rembrandt’s powerful use of light to take centre stage. A pegged, serrated hanging system completes the design.
