Giovanni Segantini - “The Bad Mothers”
Art reproduction on canvas
In Segantini’s “The Bad Mothers” , a symbolist winter landscape unfolds with a quiet yet oppressive intensity. Bare trees rise into the frost-clear sky; their branches bear the bodies of women who remain motionless in the cold - bound to nature, amidst snow, air and silence. The light lies cool over the scene, casting subtle contrasts across the snow-covered landscape, whilst the figures seem to detach themselves from their surroundings in an almost ghostly manner. Here, Segantini combines a depiction of nature with an allegorical narrative of guilt and transience; the composition appears calm, almost frozen, and derives its haunting effect precisely from this.
In the 68 × 35 cm format, the composition remains elongated and clearly aligned, thereby emphasising the vertical movement of the trees and figures. The “Leonardo” canvas precisely captures the fine textures and nuanced colour gradients of the original; its satin-finished surface reveals, upon closer inspection, a subtle, uniform weave pattern.
The canvas is stretched over a stretcher frame, with the motif mirrored at the sides and continuing onto the edges. This creates a continuous, calm finish without an additional frame, keeping the effect of the scene open and uncluttered. The artwork is hung using a serrated hanger attached to the back, which allows for simple and secure mounting.
