Retro Art

In general, "retro" refers to the recourse to forms and traditions of past years or centuries, which are taken up and reinterpreted in different ways. This can concern everyday objects of life as well as clothing, music and works of art, which are given a nostalgic, ironic or expressionistic treatment. Already our ancestors have repeatedly taken up models from the past, whether in the Renaissance, which sought a rebirth of ancient forms, or the Romantic period with its traditions glorifying the Middle Ages.

The "retro wave" that continues today is a product of the 1940s, which developed almost in parallel, if somewhat differently, in Europe and the United States. In the so-called "Retro Art", additional elements of the "Pop Art" that emerged at the same time were used. Artists such as Andy Warhol and Eduardo Paolozzi are therefore also assigned to both genres. Especially in the advertising industry, the eye-catching graphics with old-fashioned motifs were quickly taken up, as they were easy to reproduce and gave the customer a feeling of "things used to be better". Contemporary artist Anne Taintor, on the other hand, uses domestic stereotypes in her "retro advertising art" to address the modern woman in the modern-postmodern debate. While in the beginning mainly the characters of the previous 1920s and 1930s were integrated, today's artists have expanded their choice of themes to include the symbolism of all past centuries and different cultures.
