The first mechanical duplication process was heliography, discovered by Niepce. Daguerrotype, developed in 1838, already required much shorter exposure times. From 1880, photography was possible for everyone thanks to the invention of the dry plate. In order to do justice to their own aspirations, associations for photography were founded all over Europe and the USA. They wanted to establish photography as an art form in its own right. They organized exhibitions, lectures and exchanged ideas.

The art of photography in the 19th century developed mainly from the desire of the middle classes to obtain expressive portraits. Until then, this was the domain of painting. People dressed up for a photo session, it was an event. Long exposure times required long sessions, which in turn required effort. From the beginning, portrait photography was the focus of classical photography.

Photography in this century was undergoing rapid change. The new technology changed constantly and allowed limitless possibilities of representation. One retouched, copied and worked with various creative elements. Theatres and public places also became more and more important, which also resulted in enormous development potential for photography. Many photographic works of the time were based on Impressionist painting. Art Nouveau also played an important role. At the same time, the fantastic possibilities of photography for documentation purposes were recognized. Therefore, it was increasingly used in architecture and industry.
