Expressionism

The art movement Expressionism covers the period from the beginning of the 20th century until about 1930. With the increase of expression, this style describes the attitude towards life of a young generation at that time. With all available means, the young artists aimed to increase their personal expression. Not only the visual arts, but also music, literature, the performing arts and architecture were seized by this expressive current. In modern art, German Expressionism has a high status alongside French Fauvism or Cubist art style.

Outstanding artists such as Paul Klee ("Cat and Bird"), Ludwig Kirchner ("The Circus Rider") or Emil Nolde ("Candle Dancers") shaped Expressionism in painting. With a successful reduction of motifs, these painters brought their subjective emotions to the canvas. In their idiosyncratic formal language and with unmixed, strong colors, they dissected the motifs and created expressive works. The young artists understood this creative freedom as a resistance against social and societal ills of the time.

Famous groups of artists were formed during this time. The Dresden association "Die Brücke" with artists such as Karl Schmidt-Rotluff, Max Ernst and Paula Modersohn-Becker or the Munich group "Blauer Reiter", including the painters Franz Marc ("Die großen blauen Pferde"), August Macke ("Tunisreise"), Gabriele Münter and Wassily Kandinsky ("Gelb-Rot-Blau"), are world famous.
