Portrait painting

Portraits - both as paintings and sculptures - are as old as art itself. In a time before photography, they were the only way to capture the face of a person. On the one hand, this was important to make particularly influential personalities known beyond their residence, and on the other, to immortalize a person for posterity. While portraits in early antiquity, such as in Ancient Egypt (with the exception of Akhenaten's reign), were still quite idealized, they became increasingly naturalistic over the centuries.
Not least for this reason, embellished portraits could sometimes have serious consequences. Thus Thomas Cromwell, 1st Earl of Essex, reprimanded the court painter of Henry VIII. (Henry VIII Tudor) Hans Holbein the Younger to paint a benevolent portrait of Anne of Cleves because Cromwell was desperate to arrange a marriage between Henry and Anne. As a result, when Henry then came face to face with Anna, he expressed his displeasure at her appearance and the marriage did not last long. The frequently quoted remarks that Anna was a "Flemish mare" or looked "like a horse" cannot be substantiated, but are probably quite close to the English king's reaction.

More abstracted portraits did not become fashionable again until the 19th century. Photography had replaced painting as the means of choice for depicting reality, and art styles such as Impressionism and Expressionism, which pursued a different focus, came into vogue.
