Orientalism

When one thinks of the motifs of "Orientalism", one immediately thinks of great adventures against an exotic backdrop, monumental pyramids, sensual romance and permissive harem ladies. Depictions of a mysterious, seductive and at the same time decadent, "foreign" world.

Oriental paintings date from the mid-19th century to the late 1880s. However, "Orientalism" also includes other works in image and text from the early years of the 20th century. Near and Far Eastern motifs influenced not only painting and the applied arts, but also architecture, music, and literature. Artists were often inspired by travels to the Orient and their experiences there. Or also from imported goods, such as porcelain from China.

The term "Orientalism" is still relatively young. In 1978 it was coined by the US-American literary critic Edward Said. The interpretation of orientalist works is not entirely uncontroversial. Some see in it a chauvinistic view of Europe towards the Arab world and the Near and Far East. Western power fantasies in the shadow of colonial territorial claims. For others, Orient images are simply a romanticized view of the Orient. An unknown and fascinating world, in which one wants to sink oneself rapturously.

Well-known representatives of "Orientalism" are the French painters Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres and Eugène Delacroix. On the German side, among others, Gustav Bauernfeind, Eugen Bracht or Georg Macco. As well as the Austrian Leopold Carl Müller.
