Realism
The Frenchwoman Rosa Bonheur is a famous animal painter of realism. Born in Bordeaux in 1822, she learned painting and drawing techniques early from her artist parents. "Plowing in Nevers" shows a herd of different colored oxen with farmers doing field work. The powerful animals move the plow pulling over a summer field. The painter masterfully creates muscles and movement, with some animals looking down towards the ground, while the lead animals take the lead from the head posture. At the same time, the viewer is at the same time a spectator of a ritual that takes place every day in summer during field work. In contrast to the constant movement of the animals and the dynamic arm movements of the farmers is the green, brown and hilly nature, which derives its beauty also from the rest. Only the white clouds, which point over the forest in the left part of the picture, underline the constant movement of the herd: This is a perfect summer's day.
