The original title of what is probably the most famous painting by Dutch Baroque painter Rembrandt van Rijn is actually "De compagnie van Frans Banning Cocq". Frans Banning Cocq, depicted in the picture as the captain of an Amsterdam vigilante, was Mayor of Amsterdam from 1650 to 1655. Such vigilantes existed during the Eighty Years' War, in which the Netherlands sought to liberate itself from the supremacy of the Spanish crown, many. The shooters pictured on the painting are mostly real members of the Kloveniers Guild. The locality, which can be seen in the picture, should, however, have sprung from Rembrandt's imagination. Originally, the still 437cm x 363cm large painting was 510cm x 402cm tall. The picture was trimmed in 1715 when it was brought to the town hall by the Amsterdam Shooting Guild.

My favorite picture of Rembrandt. That was another artist who created really impressive paintings.
