Joaquín Sorolla takes the viewer in the south of Europe to the sea: A naked boy in side view leads a white horse on the sandy beach out of the water. Shadows on the beach suggest that it is lunchtime and the sun is shining intensely. For this reason, the boy shields his face with a large straw hat; a motif that can be seen again and again in the Spanish artist. Humans and animals seem to be perfectly attuned to each other: with a calm look, the horse follows the instructions of the child, which safely guides the reins. Masterfully, the movements of child and horse are captured. The whole scene is bathed in light, so that the viewer thinks he can feel the sun itself. Sorolla does not only shine with image composition and movement. His color palette also distinguishes him as a great artist in terms of water surface, reflections, sandy beach and flesh tint.
