When Eurydice had died because she had been bitten by a snake while fleeing from Aristaeus, who had wanted to rape her, her husband Orpheus descended to the underworld to seek Hades for the release of his wife. Orpheus was a talented musician from Thrace who had once given Apollo a lyre on which Orpheus now played to soften Hades' heart. Surprisingly, the Lord of the Underworld granted Orpheus his request. However, he tied them to a condition: Orpheus had to go on the way out of the underworld and should not turn to Eurydice. When Orpheus, on the way up, heard no more footsteps behind him, he turned and Eurydice disappeared again into the depths of Hades.
