The giant titans were the first gods of Greek mythology. The twelve titans of the first generation were the children of Gaia (earth) and Uranos (heaven). The ruler of the Titans, Kronos, had already overthrown his own father when he was predicted that one of his children, too, would bring about his downfall. Kronos devoured his children shortly after birth. But Kronos' sister and wife Rhea hides the sixth and youngest of their children, Zeus, from Kronos. When he was grown, Zeus freed his five siblings from Krono's stomach and led a war against the Titans, which ended in their fall into the Tartaros. Zeus and his siblings Hestia, Poseidon, Hera, Demeter and Hades ruled the world from then on.
