Icon painting  ·  Famous Masterpieces

Rublev's famous icon symbolically depicts a scene from Genesis depicting the visit of three angels to Abraham and Sara. The similarities between the angelic figures show no differences in rank. It is certain that they each stand for part of the Holy Trinity. However, it remains unclear which of the characters doing what role. One reason for the symbolic character of this image is the missing incarnation of the God Father on earth. It was not until 1904 that this painting from the early 15th century was discovered and today it is one of the most famous icons of Russian art history. The symbolism of the colors can be easily attributed to the theological context of the picture. The blue and gold colors of the garments stand for the divine transcendence and omnipotence. Because of the significance of the motif, it can also be found on many other Orthodox icons of the time.
