Icon painting

Icon painting is a religious "craft", icons are elementary in the spiritual life of Orthodox parishes. They show portraits of saints, images of Mary and Christ. Their painters always remain anonymous. Icon painting was already standard in medieval Byzantium. Given motifs were used. Even facial expressions, gestures and colours are prescribed to this day. But only with the inscription a Christian icon gets its religious value.

One "writes" with tempera colours on wood. The background of the picture is gilded, for which even gold leaf was used on ancient icons. The colors have high symbolic content. Gold is the colour of divine light, light red the colour of the martyrs, green and blue stand for creation, purple for the divine. Icons deliberately have no pictorial perspective, because the divine does not need a vanishing point in the distance. The frontal view is intended to create an immediate relationship between the representation and the viewer. There are often multiple vanishing points on an icon.

When icons were painted by people considered less holy, a huge icon boom began. By the 18th century, some workshops were producing as many as 50,000 icons a year. The original spiritual background was lost, whereupon the consecration of icons was introduced. The images were brought into the church for examination, prayers were said and holy water was sprinkled on them. A consecrated icon remains on the altar for 40 days as a reminder of the values of a pious life.
