Naturalism

As a period term, naturalism refers to a movement that dominated literature and the visual arts in the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, respectively. However, the term is also occasionally used to describe works that correspond to naturalism in style, intention, and mode of representation, although they were created at a different time.

The essential characteristic of naturalistic art is the endeavor to represent reality as accurately, unembellished and true to reality as possible. This also and especially includes the depiction of social and human misery. A typical motif of naturalistic painting are everyday scenes from the life of lower social classes. Until then, these had only received attention in art - if at all - in a highly idealized and idyllic form. However, even completely unrealistic motifs can be depicted naturalistically, if, for example, proportions, colors and perspectives are depicted true to nature.

Antoine Castagnary's manifesto "La philosophie du salon de 1857", published in 1858, was the first theoretical writing to deal with the still young movement. Subsequently, the French painter Gustave Courbet (1819-1877) played an important role in the theoretical discussion of naturalistic art and was himself one of its most important representatives. Among the most important naturalistic artists from Germany were Max Liebermann (1847-1935), Paul Weber (1823-1916) and Käthe Kollwitz (1867-1945).
