Unryu, 55g

The delicate Unryu paper is still made today following a recipe rooted in deep tradition. Fibers taken from the bast layer of the mulberry tree are worked with crystal-clear mountain water into a fine pulp. Once cooked, this pulp is carefully hand-scooped to create the coveted paper. The mulberry's long fibers make it possible to produce this ultra-thin paper that nonetheless stands out for its impressive durability and tear resistance. In Japanese culture, the structure of its natural fiber bundles is associated with dragons gliding through the clouds — hence its poetic name, Unryu, meaning 'Cloud Dragon.' At just 55 g/m², this paper brings out understated motifs and subtle color applications with cloud-like elegance. Unryu's shimmering transparency provides the perfect stage for light-filled art presentations. Light yet robust, this single-layer paper is similar to Western parchment — but surpasses it with its remarkable tear resistance, making it ideal for free-hanging displays, whether suspended from the ceiling or floating in a room. It serves as an authentic foundation for artworks that Japanese masters originally designed for scroll presentations. Unryu is perfectly suited for works that favor restraint over dense color application. Photographs where the simplicity of the composition is highlighted by the play of light. Paintings that center on a single motif, as botanical painters have preferred through the ages. Delicate watercolors gain an extra dimension of vibrancy through the paper's distinctive texture. Originally created for Japanese artists, Unryu's texture harmonizes beautifully with the aesthetics of various art periods, carrying them into the present. Its characteristic surface becomes an integral part of the artistic effect, lending each print an unmatched, graceful expressiveness.
