The Dutch painter Jan van Huysum comes from a well-known family of artists. His grandfather Jan Huysum I was also a painter and also decorated door frames and vases. His father Justus van Huysum and his brother Jacob were still life and landscape painters. His younger brother Justus van Huysum II was a famous and talented painter of fight scenes. However, he died at the age of 22. Jan van Huysum started an apprenticeship with his father, but soon surpassed his father's skills. He was a very versatile painter and tried different subjects such as landscapes, fight scenes, portraits and still lifes. Jan van Huysum's daughter Francina Margaretha, like him, became a painter of still lifes and especially flowers. She is said to have supported him later in some of his works.

Almost half of van Huysum's pictures exhibited publicly today are landscape pictures. Many of the scenes he painted came largely from his imagination. Accordingly, they looked very one-dimensional and lifeless and were not as popular as his paintings of flowers and fruits. Finally, he was trained by his father as a still life painter. Van Huysum stood out from other Dutch still life painters. He was one of the first artists to choose a light background for his works. In addition, he insisted on painting everything he depicted in his paintings solely from direct observation. This level of detail went so far that he let a customer know that she had to wait a year for her picture. He justified the delay by saying that the yellow rose he needed for the picture was now unavailable. In his works van Huysum processed flowers from all seasons, color variations, blooming and withering conditions. He also often painted some insects in the picture to make it look more natural.

Van Huysum not only wanted to entertain and flatter the eye with his works, but also to call the viewer to believe. Van Huysum was highly valued among his contemporaries and they called him the phoenix of the flower painters. He was one of the few painters who were able to achieve large sums for their works during their lifetime. Lovers often paid a thousand guilders and more for one of his paintings. Van Huysum was known across national borders and was also commissioned by some nobles and royal families. In his late years, however, van Huysum's talent seemed to gradually wear off and his works were no longer so finely elaborated and therefore less sought after. He died at the age of 66 in his hometown Amsterdam and left his family with a sizeable fortune of around 20,000 guilders. Van Huysum was not a traditional teacher, but he shaped the art scene well into the 19th century. Many artists such as Jan van Os, Gerard van Spaendonck or Ferdinand Georg Waldmuller oriented themselves to van Huysum's works and tried to imitate his style. © Meisterdrucke
