Caricatures, Comics

Caricatures/comics are illustrated stories that often depict their protagonists in an exaggerated manner. Especially in caricatures, political or social grievances are so often denounced. The origins of both art forms - which are usually not clearly distinguishable from each other - lie in antiquity. Already in Egyptian tombs there are picture stories with a text of hieroglyphics. Roman victory columns and wall paintings, such as those in Pompeii, are also nothing other than early comics. In some cases, the first distorted depictions are also already noticeable, reminiscent of today's caricatures.

During the Middle Ages, sequences of pictures, for example on tapestries or in churches, were a tried and tested means of telling stories to the largely illiterate population and bringing them closer to them. In the process, satirical motifs also find their way in again and again.

The first highlight of caricature was during the Reformation. Protestants and Catholics alike used it to denigrate the other side on leaflets. Comics and caricatures finally became socially acceptable at the end of the 18th century in England. Short, humorous and peppered with satirical side blows, they are printed and distributed in joke and caricature sheets.

In the late 19th century, the comic strip in the USA takes on the form that still characterizes it today and soon spreads to Europe. In the meantime, the satirical and narrative picture stories have become an indispensable part of art and literature.
