Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio - “The Inspiration of Saint Matthew”
Art reproduction on canvas in a gold ‘Alanna’ frame
With Caravaggio, a sacred moment is never detached or sanitised. In ‘The Inspiration of Saint Matthew’ too, the effect arises from immediate proximity: The evangelist sits before his book, his body tense, his gaze focused, whilst the angel turns towards him and brings the scene to life from the darkness. Caravaggio, one of the defining painters of the Baroque period, made light a narrative device. It not only defines the forms, but also directs the viewer’s gaze towards what is happening internally: hesitation, inspiration, movement.
The reproduction measures 30 × 47 cm and is printed on Leonardo (satin) canvas. The satin finish enhances the strong light-dark contrasts and lends a sense of calm to the warm tones. The motif is mounted on a stretcher frame and continues in a mirrored pattern along the sides, so that the edges of the picture appear seamless.
The classic gold frame “Alanna” , at 15 mm wide and 14 mm high, remains slim yet provides a bright accent against the dark depth of the image. A pin-mounted scalloped hanging system completes the design.
