The painting and its very comprehensive title show very clearly that the story is written by the winners. Motecuhzoma Xocoyotzin or Moctezuma II had tried with all diplomatic means to keep the Spaniards at a distance, but still greeted them with all due hospitality when they nevertheless arrived in Tenochtitlan. Hernán Cortés had the Aztec king arrested under false pretense and held him only as a puppet in power, which resulted in an uprising in which Moctezuma 1520, when Cortés forced him to negotiate with the insurgents, died. So much for the claim that the Aztec king lived on for 27 years after the scene on the painting. Rather, the picture shows the last moments in the life of Moctezuma, who was either mortally wounded with stones by his own people or stabbed from behind by the Spaniards themselves.
