Raphael's fresco pays homage to the greatest minds in history. At the center of the painting are Plato, whose appearance was modeled after Leonardo da Vinci, and Aristotle in discourse. Plato's teacher Socrates is a little off the subject in a discussion with Alcibiades, Xenophon and another man who is either Aeschines or Antisthenes. Raphael himself stands at the right edge of the picture, honoring many artists of his time by fashioning the thinkers of antiquity according to their example. Michelangelo is immortalized as Heraclid and Bramante as Archimedes or Euclid in the painting. The only person who turns his gaze to the viewer is at the same time the only woman who does not just stand there as a listener: Hypatia of Alexandria.
