Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was a founding member of the artist group "The Bridge", which is considered a pioneer of German Expressionism. To this day, he is one of the most important expressionist artists of the 20th century. Through his fascination for the primitive and his conviction that dancing brought people together with their basic drives, dance figures became a recurring theme in his work. Czardas dancers is arguably Kirchner's most famous dance painting. The image represents a scene of modern life and consists of large areas of color that contrast and merge. It was painted in 1908, but in 1920 Kirchner changed the painting by filling originally unpainted areas with bright colors.
