The four-day battle was a naval battle off the coast of Flanders between the fleets of England and the United Netherlands in 1666 during the Second Dutch-English War. Storck captures the longest naval battle in world history in a monumental painting depicting the final phase of the battle: the Dutch fleet under the command of Admiral Michiel de Ruyters breaks through the ranks of the British fleet from the southwest under the command of Admiral George Monck, 1 Duke of Albemarle. The extremely risky strategy allowed the Netherlands to win the battle, but failed to match the fleeing British. For although only four of the 84 ships were lost, the remaining had sometimes taken 1000 shots. In addition, food and ammunition were exhausted.
