The Waltraud frame combines solid wood with a subtly shaded, two-tone finish. The 30 mm wide and 24 mm high profile features a wide, gently curved outer surface in black-brown and anthracite. The brushed, patinated finish reveals warm brown and almost black tones beneath, lending the frame its understated vintage look. Towards the picture opening, there is a narrow, slightly projecting inner edge in antique silver. Its longitudinal brushing catches side light without producing a mirror-like shine. This profile design follows the tradition of dark panel frames with a light-coloured inner strip. Such colour gradations were used to guide the eye across a calm outer surface towards the subject and to clearly distinguish dark areas of the image from the frame. In photographs, the silver edge serves a similar purpose to a fine line of light: it cleanly separates deep blacks whilst simultaneously highlighting the lighter areas of the print. We particularly recommend Waltraud for high-contrast black-and-white photography, such as urban architecture, as well as for pigment prints with subdued landscape tones. It looks its best when the subject features distinct light and dark areas. It also frames larger formats effectively without detracting from their tranquillity.
