Painting Frames "Theresa" |

| The ‘Theresa’ picture frame demonstrates just how much a frame can influence the way a work of art is perceived. Its solid wooden profile is only 20 mm wide and 18 mm high, yet it has a delicately contoured shape: A gently curved, green main surface leads via a narrow recess to the silver inner edge. This light-coloured edge acts as a threshold of light. It separates the frame from the image, yet at the same time gently guides the eye into the picture. The brushed mint green is finely grooved and interspersed with darker and warm, brownish traces of patina. Depending on the angle of the light, individual lines stand out silvery, whilst others recede. The antique silver, too, remains deliberately understated and appears to shimmer softly rather than gleam. The design follows the tradition of narrow, coloured gallery frames, such as those used particularly for prints, watercolours and smaller landscape paintings. In such works, the frame was intended to complement the colour scheme without visually weighing down the artwork. We particularly recommend ‘Theresa’ for light-filled garden scenes by Claude Monet or delicate landscape watercolours by William Turner. The frame looks at its best when shades of green, blue or silver recur in the subject. We particularly appreciate this interplay: the frame does not merely enclose the artwork, but sets its opening and closing hues. |
