| Irena, green-gold – the frame that takes a back seat without hiding itself. To be honest, we’re usually a bit sceptical about green frames. Colour on the edge can quickly overwhelm a picture. Irena doesn’t do that, and it’s down to the shape of the profile. The cross-section features a shallow groove – the visible surface slopes downwards in a gentle concave curve towards the rebated edge, whilst the outer edge remains straight and narrow. This groove shape is familiar from the simple panel frames of the 19th century, such as those used in workshops and painters’ studios for studies and landscapes: no ornamentation, but a channel that guides the eye inwards. With a width of 47 mm and a height of 35 mm, this is precisely what happens, without the frame taking up any space. The surface is a light grey-green with golden cracks running through it, complemented by fine dark speckles and a grooved texture that glows like a brushed finish in raking light. The cut edge reveals continuous, open-pored wood. A dark green edge runs along the rebate, separating it from the artwork. We recommend it for contemporary watercolours, botanical motifs or photographs with subdued colours. It looks its best when the artwork itself uses muted tones. |
