Painting Frames "Estella" |

| What we particularly like about Estella is the subtle interplay of black and silver: the dark background remains understated, whilst delicate, longitudinal textures shimmer silvery in the light. The brushed finish lends the surface a sense of movement without distracting from the picture with a strong sheen. The narrow solid wood moulding features an attractive concave profile. From the slightly rounded, raised outer edge, the front slopes down in a gentle curve towards the edge of the picture. In this way, the shape draws the eye inwards; at the same time, it creates soft streaks of light and a darker shadowed area. At 19 mm wide, the frame retains a delicate appearance, whilst its height of 28 mm lends it a sense of spatial presence. Stylistically, Estella follows in the tradition of Modernist minimalist framing. The cove itself is an older design element, but here it is used without any ornamental embellishment. In the 20th century, simple, narrow profiles frequently accompanied drawings, prints and photographs: they clearly delineated the work without creating a narrative stage of their own. We recommend Estella, for example, for a black-and-white photograph with subtle grey gradations or a serene abstract print. Its delicate structure is shown to its best advantage when the subject allows it some space to resonate. |
