This four-centimetre-wide wooden strip is a frame we like to choose when a picture needs clear definition without appearing to be decoratively bordered. Its deep black finish is matt and perfectly smooth, ensuring there are no distracting reflections. Glancing light casts only a gentle, cool shimmer across the surface, allowing the precise mitre joints to stand out calmly. The profile is not simply flat: a wide, straight outer surface lies over a recessed inner web. At the edge of the picture, this step forms a narrow shadow gap. It creates a little distance between the subject and the frame and draws the eye inwards like a dark threshold. At the same time, the sturdy outer edge provides support for the picture, particularly with larger formats. The design follows in the tradition of the functional gallery and exhibition frames of the 20th century. Such straight black profiles were often used for prints, photography and modern painting because they emphasise contours and clearly define colours. We particularly recommend this frame for black-and-white photographs or constructive, geometric compositions. It looks its best when the subject features clear lines, light areas or strong contrasts. For us, it is a reliable frame for pictures that are meant to speak for themselves.
