Johann Baptist Drechsler

Johann Baptist Drechsler, born January 28, 1756 in Lichtental, now part of Vienna, lived as a remarkable Austrian painter, recognized far beyond the borders for his exquisite flower painting. His birth into a family of artists, his father Josef Drechsler was a renowned porcelain painter, shaped his path and passion for art. Between 1772 and 1782, he devoted himself to working at the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory. His zeal and skill did not go unnoticed and led him to the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, where in 1787 he accepted the coveted post of first professor of the newly established class of flower painting. A decade later, he attained the prestigious title of Director of the Academy, which recognized his unparalleled talent and contribution to art.

Deeply influenced by the Dutch flower painter Jan van Huysum, Drechsler led Viennese flower painting from the decorative style of the Baroque to a detailed naturalism. This powerful shift had profound effects on naturalistic representations of plants in the 18th century. Drechsler was thus considered the pioneer of the Viennese School of flower painting, further highlighting his influence and skill. His creative period produced numerous stunning works, including the "Small Still Life of Flowers" (1805), now proudly displayed at the Austrian Belvedere Gallery in Vienna, and other impressive works such as the "Still Life of Flowers" (1808) and the "Large Flower Piece" (1808), both now privately owned.
