Howard Pyle

Howard Pyle was a versatile artist. Born on 5 March 1853 in Washington, the scion of a Quaker family not only achieved world fame as a visual artist, but also made a name for himself as a writer.

Already in his earliest youth he wrote poems and stories, which he also illustrated. In 1983 he completed his book "The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood (of Great Renown in Nottinghamshire)", which made him internationally known and became a classic. This version, adapted for children, of the famous English folk tale of the archer fighting the tyrannical authorities became the style for many other adaptations of the time-honoured material - whether in literature, painting or film.

His drawings are also the source of the look of pirates and gypsies that is still universally internalized today. Without Howard Pyles' works, cinema heroes from Errol Flynn to Johnny Depp would probably never have acquired their flamboyant style. Howard Pyle also made an impression with his paintings. As someone who was interested in American history, he often devoted himself as a painter to just those motifs - such as the great battles. Among his most famous works are "The Battle of Nashville" (1906/07) and "The Battle of Bunker Hill" (1897). Furthermore, in 1900 he founded the Brandywine Art School, which produced many important artists. On November 9, 1911, Howard Pyle died in Florence as a result of a kidney infection.
