Giovanni Battista Moroni was an Italian painter of the late Renaissance. His birthplace and date of birth are not known, he was probably born between 1510 and 1524. His father Andrea Moroni was an architect and the family probably lived near the city of Bergamo. The young Moroni learned his artistic craft from the well-known church painter and portrait painter Alessandro Bonvicino, called Il Moretto da Brescia. In the beginning Giovanni Battista Moroni also painted mainly churches but also rooms in private houses. During an artistic stay in Trieste, Moroni met the famous painter Titian. That he also took lessons from him is an unproven rumor. The only thing that is certain is that Titian commissioned him to paint a portrait of the sons of Cristoforo Madruzzo, a very influential Italian cardinal, because he held his work in such high esteem.

After Giovanni Battista Moroni left the studio of Il Moretto and retired from Brecia to the Italian province of Albino near Bergamo, he began to paint more and more portraits, in addition to religious paintings. In the following years he painted many portraits, often of people who were not celebrities of their time. His pictures are captivating because of the naturalness and liveliness of his figures, which in a way let the viewer look into their souls. Just think of Moroni's most famous paintings "Il Sarto (The Tailor)", "Portrait of the Sculptor Alessandro Vittoria", "The Schoolmaster of Titian" or "la Dama in rosso (The Lady in Pink)", which probably shows the Contessa Lucia Albani Avogadro. Very impressive also "The Man with Letter" or "The Soldier". But of course many greats of his time belonged to his customers and had themselves or their family portrayed by him.

Almost nothing is known about the private life of Giovanni Battista Moroni. Whether he was married or had children is not known. Also his exact date of death or his place of death are not handed down. The artist probably died in 1579 or 1580. Although the painter was already known at least in Italy during his lifetime, it was not until the 19th century that he became truly famous and internationally renowned.
