Edouard Riou was a well-known French landscape painter and illustrator. Riou learned the practical knowledge of artistic techniques at Gustave Dore and Charles-Francois Daubigny. Both were successful French painters and graphic artists. He had a friendship and business relationship with the French writer Jules Verne. Riou illustrated the author's early and most famous novels, including "Journey to the Center of the Earth", "Five Weeks in a Balloon" and eleven chapters of "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea". Edouard Riou made the decision to devote himself mainly to drawing and illustration at the end of the 1850s. Before that he also produced landscape pictures. The collaboration with Jules Vernes from 1865 onwards was a wise and important step in Riou's artistic career. But even before that, the illustrations of the French artist were in demand. His works were found in the magazines "Le Monde illustré" or "Le Journal de la jeunesse" and were thus accessible to a broad public.
Edouard Riou's artistic talent was especially appreciated by representatives of the media industry. Besides Vernes, the artist worked with other great authors and publishing houses of his time. During his intensive creative period, he created more than 5,000 characters for various literary works. His detailed graphics decorate for example the reference book "La terre avant le déluge", which translated means "The earth before the flood". In literature, further illustrations are Rious in the works of Alexandre Dumas, Walter Scott and Karl May. In 1866 the artist went on a trip to Russia for the magazine "Le Monde illustré". He was allowed to capture the wedding of the Czar's daughter in his drawings.
His versatile illustrations showed impressions of his time, embellished books and dealt with important social and political events of his time. That is why his works for newspapers and magazines were in great demand. Edouard Riou actively shaped a time of artistic upheaval with his works. At this time, the professional illustrator profession gradually began to establish itself. With his works in all their facets he actively supported this development. His remarkable life's work was honoured with the Order of the French Legion of Honour. This is a French order of merit to honour military and civilian merit and special talent. This highest ranking award can be compared with the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
