Anton Mauve

    18th of September 1838   -   February 5, 1888

Anton Rudolf Mauve was a Dutch painter of realism and a leading member of the famous Hague School. He often painted simple, small-scale paintings, often showing farmers, their animals and other scenic scenes. His unconventional realism went so far that in his work "Morgenfahrt" (Morning Journey) he even painted the droppings of horses moving away from the viewer in the foreground of the painting. Another motif that Mauve liked to paint was sheep. He painted them both in a group, such as "The Return of the Flock", and in individual depictions. The paintings with sheep were very popular with his American patrons.

One year after Mauve's birth, his father Willem Carel was transferred to Haarlem because of his job as a chaplain. At the age of 16, Mauve was apprenticed to the animal painters Pieter Frederik van Os and later Wouter Verschuur. When Mauve became friends with Jozef Israëls and Willem Maris, his style, influenced by his new friends, changed significantly. He painted much more freely. His color palette also changed from brilliant clear colors to softer tones, often in gray, green and blue tones. Mauve moved to The Hague in 1872 and became one of the most important members of the Hague School. He was also co-founder of influential art societies, such as the Pulchri studios. In the last years of his life he settled in Laren. His friend Jozef Israëls also lived there. Together with him and some other painters from the region, like Albert Neuhuys, they formed the group of painters known as the Larense School.

Mauve was married to Vincent van Gogh's cousin Ariette Carbentus. He is said to have laid the foundation for van Goghs training. He gave the young van Gogh his first paintbox and kept it in his studio for 3 weeks. In the beginning Mauve taught him oil painting and later also watercolor painting. Van Gogh adored Mauve very much and mentioned him in numerous letters. Mauve always encouraged van Gogh and introduced him to Jan Hendrik Weissenbruch. He also supported him financially and lent him money for a studio and materials. The good relationship between the two deteriorated soon after. Mauve turned away from his protégé and ignored his letters. He is said to have justified his sudden rejection, among other things, by the fact that Van Gogh had a bad character. He disliked the fact that he had a love affair with the pregnant prostitute Clasina "Sien" Hornik. Besides Van Gogh, Mauve influenced many other artists, such as the Scottish painter Robert McGregor.
