Surrealism

One lays paper over rough wood and rubs it with the pencil until the grain becomes a mountain range. Frottage the Surrealists called this procedure, one of several with which they bypassed the control of reason. In the cadavre exquis each wrote or drew onward on a folded sheet without seeing what stood before; to these came dream protocols and drawing with an aimlessly drifting hand. Chance counted here not as disturbance but as source.

The movement that formed in Paris in the mid-1920s showed its painting for the first time in November 1925 in the Galerie Pierre. Telling is whose pictures hung there alongside: those of Paul Klee, whose drawn worlds were felt to be kindred, and those of Pablo Picasso, who never joined the group. The dead too were adopted, above all Henri Rousseau, whose somnambulistic pictures the Surrealists read as an anticipation of themselves.

This page deliberately follows this view of ancestors and relations. Beside Klee and Rousseau stands the Amsterdam printmaker Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, whose severely stylised animals and enigmatic dream figures form a chapter of the fantastic in their own right, joined by Sophie Taeuber-Arp, who helped shape Zurich Dada, and Heinrich Hoerle with his coolly assembled figures. Together they make not a school, rather a family of the improbable.
