Eastern European Art

Between Prague, Warsaw and Saint Petersburg painting grew from a different soil than in the West. In Orthodox Russia the image had for centuries been above all the affair of the church, and the legacy of the icon worked on for a long time, in the gravity of the faces as in the mistrust of the incidental; Catholic Bohemia and Poland stood closer to the Western pictorial tradition and yet remained marginal zones of the European art world. Secular schools of painting arose late, but then with force. Whoever wanted to become a painter in the nineteenth century usually went to the academies of Saint Petersburg, Vienna or Munich and brought their craft home.

The key moment of Russian painting was a walkout. In 1863 fourteen graduates of the Saint Petersburg Academy refused the prescribed mythological competition subject and left the house. Their spokesman was Ivan Kramskoi, who from then on organised artists' cooperatives and led painting to the questions of his own country. His Christ in the Wilderness of 1872, a brooder without a halo, became the emblem of this earnest, this-worldly art; besides it Kramskoi created portraits of the Russian world of letters, among them Leo Tolstoy.

The map of this art is wider than a single name can hold. Polish history painters, Czech landscapists, Hungarian realists shared training paths and exhibition venues with their Russian colleagues and yet each wrestled for a national pictorial language of their own. The beginning is made here by Kramskoi, their sternest mind.
