Cubism

The violin lies in pieces and yet is wholly there: Cubist pictures break their objects into facets and reassemble them on the surface, so that views stand side by side which exclude one another in reality. The impulse came from Pablo Picasso in 1907 with the painting Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, whose angular figures at first left even his Paris friends at a loss.

In the following years a method grew out of this. The palette was damped down to brown and grey so that form kept the leading role, from 1912 pasted newspaper cuttings and pieces of wallpaper migrated into the picture. Juan Gris built from the same means still lifes of almost architectural clarity and became the second Spanish pillar of the movement.

Around the innermost circle the procedure opened up quickly. In 1912 the group Section d'Or exhibited in Paris, to which Roger de La Fresnaye belonged, Robert Delaunay let the facets of his window pictures pass over into pure colour, and Maria Blanchard joined Cubist rigour to quiet humanity. In Prague Josef Čapek translated the dissection of form into a Czech variant of his own. Few pictorial inventions of the century have had a wider effect, reaching into architecture and graphic design.
