Philosopher in meditation shows two old men in a room. With folded hands one sits meditating next to the high window through which bright sunshine falls into the room. He seems absorbed, self-absorbed, turned away from the world. Quite different is the second figure, the philosopher in the foreground right. He is a symbol of the "vita activa", the active life, because he takes care of the fire around the blazing fire. His lighted, outstretched arm with poker and the fireplace fire make a diagonal reference to the light through the window. Even the view into the cave-like room is remarkably designed by Rembrandt. Thus, the view of the spiral staircase that leads to an upper floor falls. As a symbol of opening, it stands in contrast to a small, locked wooden door under the stairs. An image that perfectly stages silence, light and activity. © Meisterdrucke |
